Born in Patillas, Puerto Rico in 1944 and raised in Bayamón, Julio César Díaz is widely recognized for his sculptural work in native Puerto Rican woods. He studied at the Universidad de Puerto Rico, where he began his formal training in sculpture under the guidance of Luisa Géigel, George Warreck, and José Buscaglia in the Department of Fine Arts.
Díaz is deeply rooted in his material practice, favoring native woods such as mahogany, cedar, capá prieto, and majó. Using these materials, he creates artworks that pay tribute to the island’s natural richness, while thoughtfully exploring form, technique, and craftsmanship.
